Research Methods in Linguistics - MA

This course introduces graduate students to the key principles, paradigms, and practices of research in applied linguistics and TESOL. Students will explore major research paradigms (positivist, interpretivist, critical, pragmatic) and learn how these shape research questions, designs, and interpretations. Core quantitative, qualitative, and mixed-methods approaches will be examined alongside emerging designs such as design-based research, corpus studies, and critical inquiry. Through readings, discussions, and practical activities, students will develop the skills to critically evaluate published studies, design coherent and feasible research proposals, and select appropriate instruments for data collection and analysis. The course emphasizes both theoretical grounding and practical application, preparing students to conduct independent research for their MA thesis and future professional contexts.
